The Last Hurrah: Why Your Senior Session Needs a Family Portrait

High school senior walking along the tide at Moonstone Beach in Cambria, California, during a sunset portrait session.

There is a unique energy that comes with a high school graduation. It’s a season of “lasts” and “firsts”—the last few months under one roof before the first big steps into adulthood. While the spotlight is rightfully on the graduate, I’ve found that these sessions are often just as meaningful for the parents.

Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing this milestone along Moonstone Drive in Cambria. While I spend a great deal of my time shooting lifestyle sessions near the Morro Bay Rock or along the pier in Cayucos, there is something undeniably special about the rugged, rocky coastline of Cambria for a senior portrait. As we moved from the dramatic cliffs to the shoreline, we did something I’m now encouraging all my clients to do: we took ten minutes at the end of the session to bring the whole family into the frame.

Whether we are exploring the tide pools in Cayucos, the iconic vistas of Morro Bay, or the hidden coves of Cambria, those final few minutes allow us to capture the emotional core of this transition.
