A Thanksgiving Family Gathering in Paso Robles

Thanksgiving is one of those rare times when an entire family may be together in one place, which makes it a wonderful opportunity for extended family portraits. For this session, several generations of the family had gathered at a beautiful vacation rental in the hills of Paso Robles for the holiday.

Rather than leaving the property and traveling to a separate portrait location, we were able to photograph the family right where they were staying. The rolling hills, oak trees, nearby vineyards, and wide-open views gave us a beautiful Paso Robles backdrop without anyone having to go anywhere.

Why Vacation Rentals Work So Well for Extended Family Portraits

Paso Robles has become a popular destination for families traveling together, and many of the area’s vacation rentals and vineyard properties are wonderful locations for family photography.

Photographing at your vacation rental also makes an extended family session much easier. Everyone is already together, young children can stay in familiar surroundings, and there is no need to coordinate multiple cars or move a large group to another location.

For this family, the property gave us plenty of variety—from open countryside and oak trees to beautiful late-afternoon light as the sun dropped behind the surrounding hills.

More Than One Big Family Portrait

One of the things I especially enjoy about photographing extended families is creating much more than the traditional photograph of everyone together.

During a multigenerational family session, I typically photograph the entire group first and then work through a variety of smaller combinations. Depending on the family, that might include grandparents with their grandchildren, individual families, couples, siblings, parents with their adult children, and the grandchildren together.

These smaller groupings often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the session, while also giving every branch of the family portraits of their own.

There’s something timeless and delightful about capturing a family portrait session at San Luis Obispo creek. The soft sounds of the water, the beautiful natural light, and the lush surroundings created the perfect backdrop for this memorable shoot. This precious family has a special place in my heart as I photographed Bonnie and Beau’s wedding at the Tiber Canyon Ranch over 12 years ago and have been photographing their family portraits for the past 10 years.

Before heading down to the creek, we started the session off at the San Luis Obispo Mission as it provided the perfect backdrop with its surrounding architecture, foliage and trees as our backdrop. We chose this spot because it’s not only scenic but also has a laid-back, outdoorsy vibe that really matched their personalities as well as their clothing choices. Right away, we all felt at ease—sometimes nature has a way of bringing out the best smiles and genuine interactions, especially in family photos. We used their playful energy to get some spontaneous shots that really captured their fun, adventurous spirits. The creek itself provided so many different looks for the session. We started with a few classic poses near the edge of the water, taking advantage of the soft reflections and warm afternoon light. It was a perfect way to capture the closeness of this family. We also took a little stroll further down the creek, where the trees open up just enough to let the light stream through.

Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Farr Dentistry in Atascadero. We chose to do an outdoor staff photo shoot that captured the spirit of their Dr. Farr and his amazing team. My goal was to reflect their values and professionalism through fresh, vibrant photos that showcase the personalities of the people who make this practice special during the shoot.

We chose a beautiful outdoor location right in front of their offices in Atascadero that offered a mix of natural greenery and simple backdrops. The setting allowed us to capture a relaxed and genuine vibe, making the staff feel at ease as we moved through the shoot. The natural light was perfect, and the sunny Central Coast weather added a warm, inviting touch to each shot of the Farr dentistry Atascadero photo shoot.

A Family Portrait Session on Cayucos Beach

Cayucos has long been one of my favorite beach locations for family portraits on California’s Central Coast. It has the beautiful coastline you would expect, but it also has a relaxed, small-town feel that works especially well for families who want their photographs to feel natural rather than overly posed.

For this session, a large family came together for portraits along the beach in Cayucos. We photographed later in the afternoon as the light began to soften, giving us time to create the traditional family portraits everyone wants while also leaving plenty of room for the more relaxed interactions that happen naturally when a family is together.

The tide was fairly high that afternoon, but Cayucos still gave us plenty of room to work along the shoreline as we moved through the session.

More Than One Big Family Photograph

When I photograph an extended family, the photograph of everyone together is important—but it’s only the beginning.

I also make time for the smaller relationships within the family. That might include individual families, couples, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings, parents with their children and other combinations that are meaningful to the people I’m photographing.

These smaller groupings give everyone something special from the session and also help tell a more complete story of the family. Some of my favorite photographs are often created while moving from one grouping to another, when everyone relaxes and simply enjoys being together.

Why Cayucos Works So Well for Family Photos

One of the things I enjoy about photographing families in Cayucos is the variety we can create without traveling to several different locations.

The open shoreline gives us plenty of space for larger groups, while the water, beach and distant coastline provide beautiful backgrounds for smaller family portraits. Depending on where we photograph, the Cayucos Pier and even a distant view toward Morro Rock can become part of the scenery.

As the sun gets lower, the entire beach changes. The light becomes softer and warmer, reflections begin appearing along the wet sand, and we can create a completely different feeling from the photographs we made earlier in the session.

Relaxed, Natural Photographs by the Ocean

My approach to family photography is relaxed and natural. I’ll give direction when it’s helpful—especially when arranging a large group—but I don’t want every photograph to feel like everyone was placed into position and told to smile.

Once we have the photographs where everyone is looking at the camera, I like to give families a little room to interact. Walking together, laughing, talking or simply being close to one another can create photographs that feel very different from a traditional posed portrait.

Those in-between moments are often where personalities and relationships really begin to show.

Planning Family Photos in Cayucos

For most Cayucos beach sessions, I prefer photographing later in the day when the light is softer and we can work toward sunset. The exact starting time can vary depending on the season, weather and conditions along the coast.

Like any Central Coast beach, Cayucos can occasionally bring wind, fog or a higher tide, but that’s part of photographing along the ocean. I keep an eye on the conditions before a session and use the areas of the beach and the light that work best that particular day.

If your family is visiting Cayucos, staying nearby or gathering on the Central Coast for a vacation or special occasion, a beach session can also be an easy way to photograph everyone while you’re already together.

A Family Gathering in Paso Robles

One of my favorite things about photographing extended families in Paso Robles is that the portrait session often becomes part of a much bigger family gathering.

For this session, three generations were staying together at a beautiful vacation rental in Paso Robles. One of the reasons for the trip was simply to spend time together and celebrate the grandparents, which made having everyone photographed while they were all in one place especially meaningful.

Rather than asking the entire family to travel somewhere else for portraits, we photographed the session right at the property where they were staying. Everyone could relax, the younger family members could be themselves, and we had plenty of beautiful surroundings to work with.

Using the Vacation Rental as Our Location

Paso Robles vacation rentals can be wonderful locations for family portraits because many of them offer several different backgrounds without ever having to leave the property.

For this family, we were able to use the home’s country setting along with the surrounding landscape, mature oak trees and open areas around the property. As the light softened later in the session, the warm Paso Robles landscape gave us a completely different look.

Photographing families where they’re already staying also keeps things simple. There is no coordinating multiple cars, finding parking or getting everyone to another location at the same time. For a large family traveling together, that can make the entire experience much more relaxed.

Photographs That Celebrate the Family

What I remember most about sessions like this isn’t one particular photograph. It’s watching a family enjoy being together.

There are the photographs where everyone is looking at the camera, of course, but there are also the laughs between cousins, grandparents surrounded by grandchildren, conversations between photographs and all the little interactions that happen naturally when people who know each other well are together.

Those are often the moments that make a family portrait session feel personal rather than simply posed.
