An undivided mind

One of the things I love the most about children is their wonderful sense of play and the gift of having an “undivided” mind. One of the definitions of worry is to have a divided mind. We can learn a great deal from simply watching kids play at the beach or park. As adults it’s easy to let that quality of an undistracted mind drift into the clutter of a busy life.

Another trait we have the opportunity to learn from children is their pace. They really aren’t in too much of a hurry. Edward Hallowell, the author of “Crazy Busy” notes the following: “It’s easy to do things faster, not just because we’re busy but because speed is fun. Speed rivets attention. Speed blasts you out of boredom. Nothing is boring if it’s fast enough. But slow is agonizing. So many of us zip through life so fast we’re beyond busy, we’re crazy busy. Yet there is no correlation between a fast life and a happy life”.

Below is a Japanese version of Psalm 23. Such a simple yet profound truth that can inspire and encourage us to walk and live in the peace and rest we are called to.

The Lord is my pace setter…I shall not rush
He makes me stop for quiet intervals
He provides me with images of stillness, which restore my serenity
He leads me in the way of efficiency through calmness of mind and his guidance is peace
Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret, for his presence is here.
His timelessness, his all importance will keep me in balance
He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity by anointing my mind with his oils of tranquility
My cup of joyous energy overflows
Truly harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours for I shall walk in the Pace of my Lord and dwell in his house for ever.

The edges

I think the best pictures are often on the edges at any situation. I don’t find photographing the situation nearly as interesting as photographing the edges.
– William Albert Allard

Moments in time are really what weddings are all about. And sometimes the best moments are indeed “on the edges”. I love the serendipitous aspect of responding to people simply being themselves. The less I look for and the more I respond the more I am able to capture all that touches my heart. For when all is said and done – that’s really all we have left, moments and memories.

Signs

OK, I’ve been a bit “blogstipated” as of late. Anyway, here goes. While on my way to Kristen and Mark’s wedding in Santa Barbara last weekend I looked up and saw a sign that I have noticed for the last several years now. It’s in front of an abandoned looking Cafe/Diner right outside of Buellton. Anyway, didn’t really have time to pull over and take pics, however, the experience of seeing the sign was a “sign” for me. You see I have wanted to do some type of book, compilation of photos, etc. of signs now for several years. Well, realizing that the most difficult aspect of fulfilling a goal is actually taking the first step; so… while downtown today I decided to take the “first step”. With Jax (our new Dachshund) at my side we had a wonderful time walking around snapping away. Here are a few that stood out to me. More to follow in future.

Beach Day

We took advantage of a break in the rain and hit the waves at Avila beach today. It’s always fun boogie boarding with my son Connor and his best bud Noa. As you can see the beach was empty. It was a beautiful day at the bay. Felt great just to kick back and soak some glorious sunshine before my first official wedding of the 2007 season this Saturday. I will be at the Stella Mares in Santa Barbara. Photos to follow.

New York City

I have been greatly blessed to have three sons who love photography. Cory, my 19 year old recently returned from a trip to New York City and blew me away with the following photos he made while exploring the many sites of the city. I was really impressed with his use of composition and framing. I read somewhere once that the best things in life are more “caught” than they are “taught”. Even though I have never really overly encouraged my kids to do photography, it seems like each of them have a wonderful sence of love and appreciation for it.

2007 Wedding Fair

I always love to participate in the CCWP’s annual wedding fair. There’s always plenty of excitement in the air as couples plan for their special day. This was my booth. As always Jeannie Cross, my assistant worked the fair with me. Jeannie is an amazing assistant both as a second shooter, make-up expert, group shot organizer and just an all around fun-loving people person. Thanks to Kenneth Morgan for stopping by to take these pictures.

This year I had several different flyers printed for our booth. Here they are…

Amy’s Senior Portraits

I photographed Amy Norton, at the See Canyon Fruit Ranch in Avila yesterday. As you can see Amy has beautiful eyes and a love for animals… especially ones with spots.

First Entry!

Well, this is my first entry to my newly created blog. Even though it’s easier for me to express myself with images rather than words, I am somewhat excited to take the “blogging plunge”. This week’s entry features the most important people in my life… my family. I have been greatly blessed with my beautiful wife Stacy and our three sons, Cory, Jared and Connor. This was this year’s Christmas picture taken in downtown San Luis Obispo by the very talented Lisa Maksadian
